Chapter 3

Merdith’s prayers had been answered when it came to getting her home safely, but she made a mental note to make an appointment with the dealership to get her car checked out.

Once she was in the front door, she collapsed on the couch. “Hey Mom, wasn’t the eclipse amazing?”

“It was awe-inspiring for sure. But now I’m thinking about Taffy. She never showed, and I called the police for a wellness check but haven’t heard anything.”

Dakota sat down next to her and wrapped her arms around her. “Sorry Mom, I hope she ends up being okay.”

“Me too. Thanks for the hug, baby girl. I needed it.”

Cashew, their cat, hopped up on the sofa and curled up between them. Logan texted while she was driving that he was picking up some takeout for them and was probably gonna walk through the door any minute.

It had been three hours since Meredith had called the police. She pulled her phone out of her pocket and dialed the station. The officer who answered said they couldn’t reveal any details. All he said was, “I’m sorry, Ma’am, this is an active investigation. All I can share with you is that when we arrived at your friend’s apartment, she had already expired. My condolences.”

“No. Are you sure?”

“Yes, I’m sorry Ma’am.”

After Meredith ended the call, she held her head in her hands and the tears began to streak down her warm face. Dakota rubbed her back with the palm of her hand. Just then, Logan walked in.

“I’m so sorry, Mom,” Dakota said.

“What’s going on?” he asked as he put the bag of food down on the dining table.

“They found Taffy.”

“What?”

Meredith filled him in on how Taffy never showed up for book club and shared that she’d called the police and they went to check on her.

“Is she gonna be okay?”

“She’s gone.”

“Babe, I’m so sorry,” he said as he picked up Cashew and sat beside her.

“I just wish this would stop happening to me!”

“I know,” he said. His arms enveloped her in a warm embrace.

“Mom, maybe you’ll feel better if you eat something.”

“I’m not hungry, you two go ahead,” Meredith said.
